The PCHC Sickle Cell Disease Care Program Team participated in the Sickle Cell Association of New Jersey Brunch and Learn at Newark’s historic Krueger Scott Mansion. Founder and Executive Director of SCANJ, Ms. Mary Lamar welcomed 100 community members to learn, connect, and celebrate the resilience and successful journeys of individuals living with SCD.
Featured speaker Dr. Todd L. Savitt, PhD-Historian of Medicine, brought the room to life with an engaging exploration of the global history of sickle cell disease, its origins, its link to malaria, and the many diverse communities it touches.
Adding a deeply personal and powerful layer to the discussion, Mariah J. Scott, doctoral student and researcher in Prevention Science at Rutgers University, shared her lived experience with sickle cell disease. Her story illuminated both the challenges and the courage involved in transitioning from pediatric to adult care.
The gathering strengthened not only awareness but also emphasized a profound sense of unity and advocacy, reminding everyone that when a community comes together, healing and hope grow stronger.
