Access to Birth Control Without a Prescription in New Jersey

Governor Murphy has signed legislation allowing individuals to access certain forms of birth control over the counter. Beginning in May, pharmacists in New Jersey will be permitted to provide self-administered oral, transdermal, and vaginal contraceptives without a prescription.

Individuals will also need to complete an annual questionnaire to assess risk factors, as outlined by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These responses will be maintained as part of the patient’s medical record.
